Many are fascinated with crystals and regard them to possess mystical power that can be utilized for healing purposes, among other things.
Some believe that crystals can also stimulate spiritual growth and bring about a positive transformation in life.
The question proposed here today: is it O.K. to be actively involved with the usage of crystals for healing and activating their "crystal power"? What counsel does the Bible give on this matter?
Right out of the gate - I want to share the results of a recent study done on crystals and any possible validity to the claims that certain stones possess certain powers or connects to the metaphysical world around us, particularly the frequencies that are said to be acted upon through the crystals and our body.
This study was performed by Christopher French, a professor of psychology at Goldsmiths, University of London, on 80 people who had general to extensive knowledge and belief in the "power of crystals". The first trial took place in 2001.
For the study, the participants were asked to meditate for five minutes while holding either a real quartz crystal said to invoke a certain power or a fake crystal that they believed was real. Before meditating, half of the participants (40) were primed to notice any effects that the crystals might have on them, like tingling in the body or warmth in the hand that was holding the crystal. They were told to look for these feelings beforehand.
After meditating, participants answered questions about whether they felt any effects from the "crystal healing" session. The results were as expected, but even more to the point - the researchers found that the effects reported by those who held fake crystals while meditating were no different than the effects reported by those who held real crystals during the study.
Many participants in both groups reported feeling a warm sensation in the hand holding a real crystal and fake crystal, as well as an increased feeling of overall well being. Curiously, those who had been primed to feel these effects reported stronger effects than those who had not been primed, signaling the classic "placebo effect" took place. In otherwords, it was their own body and mind thinking so hard on it that they truly thought that they felt these sensations, whether they were holding a real crystal or fake crystals.
By this logic, I could give you a soda pop lid and prime you with the same information and you'd feel the same "sensations", when in fact it may just be your own emotions taking over and sort of like your "brain playing a trick on you". No wonder the "crystal business" is a multi-billion dollar industry!
In fact, in this study, French found that the strength of these effects and feelings did not correlate with whether the person in question was holding a real crystal or a fake one. Those who simply believed in the power of crystals (as measured by the prior questionnaire) were twice as likely as non-believers to report feeling effects from the crystal.
French concluded, "There is no evidence that crystal healing works over and above a placebo effect,"
To be completely transparent - this study did not examine the use of crystals as far as technological properties go. This was purely about a claimed advantage from holding crystals in your hand that were said to invoke feelings of love, safety, healing, etc. just by holding them.
This is far different than the technological side when we have other things, such as electricity and components, working with them. For example, sonar, ultrasound, radios, transistors, computers chips, and even digital watches, to name a few, use quartz crystals. Silicon crystals are used in every computer, tablet, cell phone, and even televisions. These same devices also use liquid crystals for their display screens.
Man uses certain crystals as part of technological properties, such as computer and TV screens, but that is a far cry of a difference from holding a piece of a crystal someone sold you that said it invokes "healing and love" if you hold it and repeat a mantra now and again. That is another lie being told, and in fact, the "crystal business" is largely built on lies to take your hard earned money!
What does the Word say about Crystals?
Crystals certainly are beautiful objects, for they were created by God, as are all other things in the world and universe for that matter. In fact, the Bible says that in the future, parts of God's glorious Heavenly city, the New Jerusalem, will be constructed from crystals.
Revelation 21:11 & 18-20 (NIV): It shone with the glory of God, and its brilliance was like that of a very precious jewel, like a jasper, clear as crystal. The wall was made of jasper, and the city of pure gold, as pure as glass. The foundations of the city walls were decorated with every kind of precious stone. The first foundation was jasper, the second sapphire, the third chalcedony, the fourth emerald, the fifth sardonyx, the sixth carnelian, the seventh chrysolite, the eighth beryl, the ninth topaz, the tenth chrysoprase, the eleventh jacinth, and the twelfth amethyst.
When evaluating the usage of crystals for healing purposes, it is important to be aware of the fact that the majority of experts who promote crystal healing are involved in the occult in some way, shape, or fashion and participate in sorcery and witchcraft. They also are running a multi-billion dollar industry off of the entire idea. I went deep into this subject in my book, Exposing the Doctrine of Demons, in a chapter titled "Christian Witchcraft?".
Now, the word occult means 'hidden'. Occultism concerns itself with the study and utilization of supernatural influences, powers and phenomena that are supposedly hidden from the regular physical senses, and are generally considered to be outside the realm of traditional scientific observation.
Occultists believe that human beings, and the world in which we live, are permeated by invisible mystical energies. They believe that these energies can be focused and directed by 'sacred stones', such as crystals and other talismans, among other things, so as to induce physical healing and spiritual enlightenment. In addition to involvement with crystal power, occultism is associated with other mystical practices such as astrology, numerology, divination, tarot cards, psychic healing, mediumship, spirit channeling, Eastern religions, ritual magic and sorcery, and New Age movement as a whole.
What does God say about your involvement with the occult? He warned the Israelites against it when they were about to enter the Promised Land of Canaan. How we should approach witchcraft, and crystals for that matter, is plain as day in the Bible:
Deuteronomy 18:9-12 (NIV): When you enter the land the Lord your God is giving you, do not learn to imitate the detestable ways of the nations there. Let no one be found among you who practices divination or sorcery, interprets omens, engages in witchcraft, or casts spells, or who is a medium or spiritist or who consults the dead. Anyone who does these things is detestable to the Lord.
The fact of the matter is that when you participate in sorcery of this kind, you are not invoking some hidden power of the world - you are actually invoking activity from the spiritual world (sometimes), and anything you come into contact with has over a 90% chance of being demonic.
Think about it - you aren't contacting your dead loved ones, for they are with the Lord awaiting Judgment, you certainly aren't making God do something to your will, it's highly unlikely that you are tapping into the power of angels because the Bible makes it clear how they operate (and this certainly isn't it), and there is no scientific proof of energies around us that we can "tap into" without the aid of some technology that man created (in other words, it's not happening by sitting and meditating and repeating a mantra).
Ask yourself, then, what else is on the board then that you are interacting with when you actually do get a reponse? The only things left are demonic forces - fallen angels, demons, demonic spirits, and the devil himself. They are the only things that would actually have a benefit to interact with you in this way because you are saying, "Yes, I'm open!". Why would God or His angels interact with you when you perform sorcery? It's clearly detested in the Bible and God said He would not tolerate anyone doing that, and also said that prayer and faith alone to the Lord is the answer and way to reach Him, not sorcery or witchcraft.
The use of 'sacred stones' for mystical purposes was common among the pagan people of the Bible Lands. Sometimes called amulets, these magical charms were made in the form of small pendants attached to a necklace or bracelet. They were worn to protect a person from negative energies, evil and injury, and also to bring good luck. However, God uttered a stern warning to the false prophetesses of Israel, who in their apostasy had adopted the pagan practice of wearing amulets.
Ezekiel 13:18 & 20-21 (NIV): This is what the Sovereign Lord says: 'Woe to the women who sew magic charms on all their wrists and make veils of various lengths for their heads in order to ensnare people. Will you ensnare the lives of my people but preserve your own? I am against your magic charms with which you ensnare people like birds, and I will tear them from your arms; I will set free the people that you ensnare like birds. I will tear off your veils and save my people from your hands, and they will no longer fall prey to your power.'
The Bible categorizes the use of amulets as a form of pagan magic. Modern proponents of crystal power regard crystal healing to be 'benevolent magic', also known as 'white magic'. Occult magic can sometimes produce spectacular manifestations of power. Instances of this are described in the Bible:
Exodus 7:10-12 (NIV): So Moses and Aaron went to Pharaoh and did just as the Lord commanded. Aaron threw his staff down in front of Pharaoh and his officials, and it became a snake. Pharaoh then summoned wise men and sorcerers; and the Egyptian magicians also did the same thing by their secret arts. Each one threw down his staff and it became a snake.
From a description of the two other miracles performed by Pharaoh's sorcerers, we know they were using occult powers, not some sleight-of-hand, stage-type magic.
Ironically - and a prime example of why we must keep the Word close to our hearts to recognize evil - miracles, signs and wonders can often be the work of Satan:
2 Thessalonians 2:9 & 10 (NIV): The coming of the lawless one will be in accordance with the work of Satan displayed in all kinds of counterfeit miracles, signs and wonders, and in every sort of evil that deceives those who are perishing.
Under the command of Satan and his principalities, demonic spirits can create these miraculous signs:
Revelation 16:13-14 (ESV): And I saw, coming out of the mouth of the dragon and out of the mouth of the beast and out of the mouth of the false prophet, three unclean spirits like frogs. For they are demonic spirits, performing signs, who go abroad to the kings of the whole world, to assemble them for battle on the great day of God the Almighty.
Spirits are angelic beings:
Hebrews 1:14 (ESV): Are they not all ministering spirits sent out to serve for the sake of those who are to inherit salvation?
Occult magic was also practiced during the era of the Early Church, however, Simon quickly learned that the power of God was much better:
Acts 8:9-13 (ESV): But there was a man named Simon, who had previously practiced magic in the city and amazed the people of Samaria, saying that he himself was somebody great. They all paid attention to him, from the least to the greatest, saying, “This man is the power of God that is called Great.” And they paid attention to him because for a long time he had amazed them with his magic. But when they believed Philip as he preached good news about the kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ, they were baptized, both men and women. Even Simon himself believed, and after being baptized he continued with Philip. And seeing signs and great miracles performed, he was amazed.
Simon discovered that the power of God was far greater than the power of the Occult, and that true healing comes from the Lord:
Psalm 103:2-4 (ESV): Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits, who forgives all your iniquity, who heals all your diseases, who redeems your life from the pit, who crowns you with steadfast love and mercy,
In the Early Church at Ephesus, practitioners of occult magic become acquatinted with the Gospel through the ministry of the apostle Paul. They were converted, and then destroyed their occult textbooks!
Acts 19:17-19 (NKJV): …the name of the Lord Jesus was magnified. And many who had believed came confessing and telling their deeds. Also, many of those who had practiced magic brought their books together and burned them in the sight of all. And they counted up the value of them, and it totaled fifty thousand pieces of silver.
And now, the final and likely most important reason to not participate in sorcery such as crystal usage: At the Second Coming of Jesus, practitioners of the occult will be prohibited from entry into the glorious New Jerusalem:
Revelation 22:14 & 15 (NIV): Blessed are those who wash their robes, that they may have the right to the tree of life and may go through the gates into the city. Outside are the dogs, those who practice magic arts, the sexually immoral, the murderers, the idolaters and everyone who loves and practices falsehood.
Failing to inherit eternal life, those who practice magic arts will, tragically, find themselves condemned to experience the second death:
Revelation 21:2, 7 & 8 (NIV): I saw the Holy City, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride beautifully dressed for her husband. He who overcomes will inherit all this, and I will be his God and he will be my son. But the cowardly, the unbelieving, the vile, the murderers, the sexually immoral, those who practice magic arts, the idolaters and all liars—their place will be in the fiery lake of burning sulfur. This is the second death.
