“The greatest trick the devil ever pulled was convincing the world he didn't exist.” - Roger Kint (Kevin Spacey)
Though the above quote is from a secular film, The Usual Suspects, it does hold some weight. From Genesis on, we learn of the devil’s plan from the beginning. The day he corrupted us in the Garden of Eden began his plot to destroy God’s most beloved creation. What does this plan entail, and how far reaching is it? This is my attempt to explain that, and more.
When we read Genesis, we see when the devil tempted Eve to eat from the Tree of Knowledge - the tree that God told her and Adam not to eat from.
Genesis 3 Now the serpent was more crafty than any of the wild animals the Lord God had made. He said to the woman, “Did God really say, ‘You must not eat from any tree in the garden’?” 2 The woman said to the serpent, “We may eat fruit from the trees in the garden, 3 but God did say, ‘You must not eat fruit from the tree that is in the middle of the garden, and you must not touch it, or you will die.
This is where the devil’s plot to destroy humanity began, and continues on today - the devil attacks truth, in more ways than one. This very first action was an attack on truth, because the devil convinced Eve to do something she knew was a true command from God, because He told them so.
Genesis 2:17: but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die.”
This is infamously known as the fall of man. In this moment, the devil was able to get Eve to question the Word of God, question how it pertains to reality and life around her, and seek knowledge and truth elsewhere instead of from God. To me, this rings true in a lot of deceptive things I see in life around us today. In Genesis it was born, and seemed so small, but when you reflect on life today, how many things seek to pull you away from the Word of God? How many things seek to get you to look elsewhere for knowledge, instead of starting with the Bible?
Proverbs 3:5-6 5 Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. 6 In all thy ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct thy paths.
The devil also promised Eve that once she ate from the tree of knowledge, that the knowledge gained would become the new standard of truth, and that she would be like God.
Genesis3:4 “You will not certainly die,” the serpent said to the woman. 5 “For God knows that when you eat from it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.”
This was the devil’s plan all along - to attack the truth, and modify the standard of truth, different from what God had spoken, and convince man that he didn’t need the Word of God to flourish and survive, and to lie about what the consequences would be of doing so and going against God’s command. This is why it is so important today that we test everything to the Word.
Anything you are involved in, if you feel uneasy about a situation, no matter what it is, you can find an answer in the Bible. With a quick search online, you can find references to the Bible for any sort of problem you are dealing with. Some Bibles even come with a reference guide of about 20 or so common problems we face today, and where to look in the Word for answers.
1 Thessalonians 5:21 But examine everything carefully; hold fast to that which is good;
1 John 4:2-6 By this you know the Spirit of God: every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God; and every spirit that does not confess Jesus is not from God; this is the spirit of the antichrist, of which you have heard that it is coming, and now it is already in the world. You are from God, little children, and have overcome them; because greater is He who is in you than he who is in the world.
This attack on truth is the devil’s game, and it is all around us. Today, we see the upbringing of churches that preach very little from the bible, dress the service up with a rock show of Christian songs, and get you in and out within 30-45 minutes, teaching you absolutely nothing about the Word, but sending you on your way thinking, “I did my good deed for the week!”. They teach nothing of seeking Jesus and applying His Word to your life, yet it is viewed as truth and OK today.
There are also religions that change the Word of God to fit their beliefs. You’ll often see this when a religious embodiment presents you with a book of Holy Scriptures, but will never claim it to be the Bible. Why? Because they have changed the Word of God to fit their beliefs, and it is no longer the Word of God, yet they are self aware enough to know that they can’t claim it to be the Word! So they know they are doing wrong and ignoring the truth God spoke, yet keep doing it anyway. God strictly forbids this practice in the Word:
Revelation 22:18-19 18 For I testify unto every man that heareth the words of the prophecy of this book, If any man shall add unto these things, God shall add unto him the plagues that are written in this book. 19 And if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part out of the book of life, and out of the holy city, and from the things which are written in this book.
Going further, there are even churches today that promote meditation and self empowerment, often through the form of Yoga or other trance like states, to get closer to God, completely ignoring how Jesus instructed us that no one gets to the Father but through Him. They are pushing the agenda that there are more ways to God than through Christ. You’ll sometimes see this dressed up with somber music and incense burning to set the mood, and promoted as truth, or a new path to the Lord.
My goal is never to bash any religion or talk down on anyone or any embodiment, rather, I encourage testing everything to the Word. If you feel like you may be involved with an organization that sounds familiar to this, with a modus operandi of attacking truth, or affiliated with an embodiment that spends most of its time attacking truth, or hates when someone speaks the truth - test it ALL to the Word. Test what they stand for to the Word, and keep in mind that attacking the truth was the devil's first trick he ever pulled on mankind. Jesus will never steer you wrong!
John 14:6 Jesus answered, "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.
The truth is being undermined every day, and seems to be ever increasing. The devil knows the Word inside and out, and seeks to undermine it every chance he gets. Today, I feel we need Jesus more than ever in our lives. Things are seemingly getting murkier every day. I’ve never seen so much hate and evil spew out from all corners of the earth to this magnitude on a daily basis. Every day, week, and month, there seems to be a new “threat” or issue in the United States and/or World. Then it passes, and moves on to something else, and sometimes circles back around.
Through various formats of communication, people are being encouraged to seek their own personal idea of truth, and to then consider the weight of that truth through its usefulness in your life - all the while completely ignoring God and The Word. If you are involved in anything that sounds like this - I urge you to examine it to the Word, and see how it stacks up. Never forget - the devil was the first one to convince man that God was wrong and that we should seek knowledge elsewhere. Keep your hearts on Jesus, our Lord and Savior.
John 3:16 For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.
